Introduction
The Romans loved all forms of entertainment, but many of the things the Romans did for fun were terrible. Sports contests, chariot races, and live theater were all very popular. Soldiers often played board games with counters and dice. Counters and boards for their games have been found. Hunting was also popular. People hunted animals for fun and for food. The Romans introduced deer to Britain, just for hunting. They also enjoyed fights between gladiators, and fights between animals. These bloodthirsty shows were put on in front of crowds in large arenas called amphitheaters. Many Roman emperors paid for free shows at the amphitheaters because it was a good way to make themselves popular.
The Romans also enjoyed seeing art and sculptures of figurines. The rich would decorate in and around their homes with the famous art pieces. Poetery, one of the many forms of literature, was a favorite of many Romans because they enjoyed the creative language in its flowy, relaxing way. Plays (live theatre) would take place in the amphitheatres, too.
