Arch
One of the most important thing that the Romans brought to architecture is the arch, which was borrowed from the Etruscans. By using concrete, bricks, and plan of the arch, Rome was able to provide the citizens with water. Aqueducts were built all over Rome.Their arch structures brought water to areas far away from natural water items. The arch quickly led to the dome ceilings used in many houses and buildings, because arched and domed structures can share weight evenly, the plan was soon being used all over the city and around the world.
The Roman arch allowed the Romans to make bigger buildings, longer roads, and better aqueducts. Arches were used in Roman buildings because of their strength and support capabilities. |
Roads
Roads were one of the biggest accomplishment that the Romans did. The Romans built their roads on grounds of clay, chalk and gravel. They laid bigger flat stones on top. The road were tilted from the middle to drain the water. The Romans built towns and cities which were connected by roads. These Roman roads which many are used today, were built with a combination of dirt, gravel and brick.
The Romans built roads so that the army could march from one place to another. Also the Romans first built the roads in Britain. They built roads straight since they could travel quickly. If it was bumpy, it would take a longer time to get to the place. |
Aqueducts
Aqueducts were long channels that the Romans built to bring water to the cities. Many of the aqueducts were below the ground. The water that was brought into the cities was used for drinking, baths, and sewers. Waste water was removed by the sewage systems and was released into nearby water, which means it keeps the town clean from poisonous water. Some aqueducts also served water for mining and agriculture. Aqueducts are like a bridge built on arches.

Domes
The domes of the Romans were found in baths, villas, and tombs. A dome which was built in the time of Augustus is the Pantheon. The domes are used in many buildings nowadays. Also they are used in different parts of the world.
Colosseum
The Colosseum is a large round arena built in the first century. The Colosseum was used for entertainment like gladiator fights. A man used to fight with a man or an animal such as a lion or a tiger. The Colosseum is made out of stones and concrete. The Romans themselves made concrete by mixing lime and volcanic rock.
